چکیده

Star formation in interacting systems may take place in various locations, from the dust–enshrouded core of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies to more unusual places such as the debris of colliding galaxies expelled into the intergalactic medium. Determining whether star-formation proceeds in the latter environment, far from the parent galaxies, in a similar way as in spiral disks has motivated the multi–wavelength study presented here. We collected VLA/HI, UV/GALEX, optical Hα and MIR/Spitzer images of a few nearby interacting systems chosen for their prominent ”intergalactic” star formation activity. Preliminary results on the spectacular collisional HI ring around NGC 5291 are presented.

Formation of First Stars Triggered by Collisions and Shockwaves: Prospect for High Star Formation Efficiency and High Ionizing Photon Escape Fraction

We show that large, high-redshift (z > 10) galaxies with virial temperature in excess of 10K may be mostly comprised of cold atomic clouds which were formerly minihalos. These clouds move at a speed of ∼ 15−30km s and collide with one another on a time scale of 10yr. The supersonic collisions result in spatially distributed star formation with high efficiency. We then show that most, subsequent...

Polychromatic view of intergalactic star formation in NGC 5291

Context. Star formation (SF) takes place in unusual places such as way out in the intergalactic medium out of material expelled from parent galaxies. Aims. Whether SF proceeds in this specific environment in a similar way than in galactic disks is the question we wish to answer. Particularly, we address the reliability of ultraviolet, Hα and mid-infrared as tracers of SF in the intergalactic me...

Identifying the Reionization Redshift from the Cosmic Star Formation Rate

We show that the cosmic star formation rate per comoving volume should exhibit a distinct drop around the reionization redshift, when the H II regions in the intergalactic medium around individual ionizing sources first overlapped. The drop results from the increase in the temperature of the intergalactic medium as it was photo-ionized, and the consequent suppression of the formation of low-mas...

Cosmic Star Formation, Reionization, and Constraints on Global Chemical Evolution

Motivated by the WMAP results indicating an early epoch of reionization, we consider alternative cosmic star formation models which are capable of reionizing the early intergalactic medium. We develop models which include an early burst of massive stars (with several possible mass ranges) combined with standard star formation. We compute the stellar ionizing flux of photons and we track the nuc...

The Minimum Universal Metal Density between Redshifts 1.5 and 5.5

It appears that the Lyman α forest is becoming thick at a redshift of about 5.5, cutting off the higher redshift intergalactic medium from view in neutral hydrogen. However, the effects of star formation at higher redshift are still readable in the intergalactic metal lines. In this paper I use observations of 32 quasars with emission redshifts in the range 2.31 to 5.86 to study the evolution o...
